Original Victorian Grape Lady China Head Doll

Original Victorian Grape Lady China Head Doll

$1,800.00

Pristine porcelain shoulder head has no chips, cracks, crazing, nor is there any rubbing of paint on the front or back of the head. She’s a fashion-conscious lady with black molded hair, captured in a detailed snood having raised net details, gilt-edged ruffles and a cluster of blue grapes at the crown. Painted blue eyes, red eyelid line, black eyelash-liner, single stroke brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed rosy mouth and rosy cheeks. Her cotton body is stitch-jointed w/stitched fingers. She wears long, sewn-on, white stockings, black-satin boots that are laced and are somewhat worn, and a white sewn-on chemise. The twelve included items of clothing are presumed by the seller to be original to the doll. The doll’s body is stained/worn, but all original.

Please, remember that the heads were sold with many different types of bodies (e.g., kid leather with porcelain arms and feet) and sometimes sold without a body. The body was then homemade. The items of clothing are probably original to the doll. The owner has not washed any of the clothing and all is “as found”.

She stands 20″ tall. Included clothing: 2 colored dresses, 2 white dresses, 1 blue skirt, 1 stripped robe, 3 long slips, 2 panteloons, 1 pantie. Made: circa 1870. Approx. 144 years old.

The Grape Lady dolls are attributed to the Shlaggenwald factory in Czechoslovakia. The quality of the Grape Lady’s porcelain is so fine that it was originally thought to have been made by KPM of Berlin, Germany, until it was learned that KPM always marked their dolls.
